Disposal rules are set by states and cities, which is why the same couch or TV can be handled differently from one place to the next. A few that come up often:

Electronics: states including California, Illinois, New York and Colorado keep many electronics out of landfills, so TVs and computers go to recyclers.
Appliances: federal EPA rules require refrigerant to be recovered before refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are scrapped.
Mattresses: some cities require mattresses to be bagged before collection, and California funds a statewide mattress recycling program.
City bulk pickup: every city sets its own limits, from six items per collection in New York City to one appointment-based pickup at a time in Phoenix.

How house cleanout pricing works

There’s no one-size price for house cleanout, so we quote each job. Here’s what the price in your city depends on:

How much space it takes up in the truck. Most jobs are priced by volume, from a single item to several truckloads.
How heavy it is. Dense materials such as concrete, dirt, tile and roofing are priced by weight.
How much carrying is involved. Stairs, elevators, long walks from the truck and taking items apart all take time.
Special handling. Mattresses, appliances with refrigerant and electronics often need separate routes to recyclers under state and federal rules.
Disposal and recycling fees. These vary by facility and are built into your quote, not added afterwards.

How long does a house cleanout take?

Most apartments take a few hours and most three-bedroom houses take a day with a full crew. Very full homes can take longer, and the timescale is agreed with the quote.

Do I need to be there?

Not necessarily. Many families and property managers arrange access with a key or lockbox, and photos are sent when the job is done.

What happens to valuables and documents?

Anything that looks valuable or personal, such as photos, paperwork and jewelry, is set aside for you. Nothing like that goes in the truck without your say-so.

Can you help with a hoarding situation?
